Chris and I went out to @cocinaluchadoras last week to show some support and I ended up stumbling into the best tamales I’ve had since a classmate let me try the tamales his mother sent with him back to school. I knew we were in for a treat as we watched the masa steam as we peeled back the corn husks and inhaled that intoxicating scent. The Lunar New Year (for me, Chinese New Year) is around the corner. It’s my first New Years and as a “real adult” and in a new city...and I’ve been thinking about what I’ve wanted this New Years to be like. There are so many childhood memories—waking up early to watch the 春节晚会 on CCTV with dad on the couch. Or making dumplings with mom and all the Chinese families we knew who’d come over because none of us had extended family in the US.
Mom would make this dish for us infrequently because she thought it was too rich, but it always came out for the special occasions—cause it’s a pretty crowd pleaser: 八宝饭 aka eight treasures rice. The glistening jewels that are the maraschino cherries, the earthy sweet red bean paste. This New Years, I have at least two traditions I know I’ll be carrying close with me (八宝饭 and making dumplings with friends). #abc #chineseamerican #chinesenewyear .
