Took a minute to go to my great grandparents’ resting place. Here is a #Black and #NativeAmerican man and his wife who the product of a #slave and her master. They married in 1918 and purchased a 300+ acre #farm in 1920. I remember my great #grandmother telling stories about how the #KKK came to their home several times, burning crosses in the yard. She said they came one night to kill my great grandfather but he wasn’t home when they came. She saw them coming down the road approaching the house. She went inside, got her shot gun, and waited on the porch in her rocking chair. They exchanged some words and threats, but left and never came back. I never knew my great grandfather personally but I heard amazing stories about him; both good and bad. It fills me with #pride and #humility to imagine how hard he had to #work in order to accomplish all he did as a black man in rural #NC in those days. Thinking of him makes me feel like I need to #GoHard each and every day. My great grandmother, whom my mother is named for, passed when I was 7 but I remember her so vividly. The smell of her hair. What her skin felt like. Her smart and sassy ways. Her insistence on “doing what she wanted to do”. The #AlzheimerDisease that stole her memory in her latter years, and effected 5 of her 10 daughters in their senior years. I owe so much to them. Now, three #generations later, the farm is still in tact and belongs to my cousins and I. We are #building on the #legacy Addison and Pattie #Sumler created. I #hope to make them #proud. #SumlerAcres #BlackHistory #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackFamily #Love #Heritage #Nonprofit #Unity #BlackPower #Stories #Poetry #Life
